Back to School for Heal the Hood Practical Hip Hop School

OMC15FEW people know that Cape hip-hop icon and activist Emile YX? is a qualified school teacher who has created a hip-hop school for some of the youth from Lavender Hill. It has become the Heal the Hood Projects Practical Hip Hop School, called “Mixed Mense”.

This year, the school starts its second of a three-year course, created by Emile, who is from the group Black Noise and a judge on the etv dance show, Step Up or Step Out.

Last year saw Mixed Mense teach at schools in the afternoons from Monday to Friday, release a CD and music video with Emile, perform at various large events, participate in the hip-hop dance play, Break, at Artscape, and tour the Kalahari to perform for the Khoisan community.

This year’s touring extends nationally and internationally. Mixed Mense will continue to raise funds for flights via performances at schools, teaching and touring George, Knysna, Oudtshoorn, Pacaltzdorp and Riviersonderend in March.

They plan to leave for the USA in April and will return to expand the “Heal the Hood” project throughout the country, with a national tour for the African Hip Hop Indaba.
